This is a short list of dental terms that you can read in the quotations. The purpose of this list is to better understand your treatment plan. 3D scan: This procedure makes 3 dimensional images of your teeth, jaw and sinus. It aides the oral surgeon exactly define the position of the screw. By this procedure implantation success rate can reach nearly 100%. It is the same as CT scan.
Aesthetic composite filling: It is used in case of smaller cavities. It is made of composite so its white color fits to your teeth.
All-on-2: A solution when an overdenture is placed on two implants. This solution causes very little bone loss, as only two implants are placed in the jaw.
All-on-4: A denture that is placed to 4 implants. All-on-4 can be applied to both bottom and top jaw. It is applied when you have no teeth in the jaw concerned.
All-on-6: It is a solution when either an overdenture or a complete bridge with porcelain fused to metal crowns are fixed to 6 implants.
Abutment: When you get a tooth replacement it is the connecting item between the dental screw and the crown. It is also applied if you receive an implant based denture (All-on-4). Then it connects the screw and the denture.
Bio HPP: Bio High Performance Polymer. It is developed for dentistry, mostly for all-on-4. The mechanical features of BIO HPP are very close to human bone tissue.
Bone graft: In some cases you have no enough bone to receive a dental implant. Bone grafting material causes the surrounding cells to make new bone tissue. After the proper healing time is over you will have enough bone to receive implants.
Bridge: It is a kind of tooth replacement if you have a tooth gap and implantation is not possible or you do not want it and the adjacent teeth to the gap are healthy then bridges are applied. A bridge is formed by welding crowns together where the teeth next to the gap serve as pillars. A bridge can be made of porcelain fused to metal or zirconium crowns. It can be as long as five units long.
CAD/CAM: Computer aided design/computer aided manufacturing. This technology is usually applied to the preparation of zirconium crowns. Since no human take part in the manufacturing process CAD/CAM technologies provide high precision crowns that perfectly fit the teeth.
Crown: It is a cap that placed on a tooth. A crown is placed on a previously prepared tooth. Zirconium and full porcelain crowns can be used for cosmetic dental treatments to front teeth. If your teeth are damaged and chewing ability needs to be restored then to molar teeth usually porcelain fused to metal crowns (PFM) are used. PFM crowns have a metal base and they are coated with porcelain. Zirconium and full ceramic crowns are totally metal free and provide perfect natural look.
CT scan: It is the same as 3D scan. You can read more about it there.
Front teeth: 6 teeth in an arch. It is the 4 incisors and 2 canines. When you speak or smile these teeth are usually seen.
Implant: It is used when you need a tooth replacement. It is the artificial root that is placed in the jaw. It is the same as a dental screw.
Medication pack: It is free and provided by the clinic. It includes pain killers, antibiotics after surgery like placement of implants and icy jelly to prevent swelling.
Molar teeth: They are the last three teeth in the jaw (including wisdom teeth).
Normal tooth extraction: When no surgical procedure is needed to the intervention of a tooth removal.
Overdenture: It is a removable denture usually fixed to two or four implants. It provides much better chewing, speaking and tasting ability then traditional plastic dentures.
Panoramic x-ray: It is a 2 dimensional image of your teeth. It aides the dentist to see those things that are invisible during a medical examination. The panoramic X-ray shows the tooth structure, root condition and possible inflammations and on the grounds of it a treatment plan can be set up.
Porcelain fused to metal crown: It is a cap on a damaged tooth. There is a porcelain coating on the metallic frame. It can be used as an individual crown or in bridges. It is usually used for molars due to its mechanical features.
Post and core build up: If you had root canal treatment or your tooth is weak then a little whole is drilled in the tooth or root canal and a tiny rod is placed in it to strengthen the tooth.
Premolar teeth: These are the teeth between front and molar teeth. You have 4 of them in an arch.
Root canal treatment: During this treatment pulp is removed and stuffed with a material that provides perfect closure. Front teeth usually have one root, premolars have two roots and molars have three roots. The cause of this treatment is generally inflammation. This treatment can be carried out totally pain free.
Sinus lift: It is needed if there is no enough bone in the upper jaw at the molar teeth regions. In this case the molars are close to the sinus and teeth roots might surpass this area. In case of implantation it is not allowed that the upper end of screws would rest in this loose tissue, so bone grafting material is placed to the sinus by a surgical intervention.
Screw: It is the same as implant. You can read about it there.
Temporary crown: You receive it after your tooth is prepared. You should wear this plastic crown for a few days. It is to provide chewing ability and prevent the slightest damage to the prepared tooth until it receives the final crown.
Temporary veneer: It is the same as a temporary crown but for veneers.
Temporary crown laboratory long term: You get it if you have to wear it for months until you receive the final crowns. It is made in a dental lab and it is of better quality than the temporary crown.
Trepanation: First stage of root canal treatment. In this process the dentist widens the root canal.
Veneer: A very thin layer of porcelain or composite that covers the front part of your teeth. Veneers are very often used for aesthetic reasons. It is either made of composite or porcelain. Porcelain provides better and natural look but composite is also aesthetic.
Wisdom tooth extraction: Removal of the last tooth in the jaw. It may need surgical procedure.
Zirconium crown: It is a cap on teeth. It is usually applied for aesthetic reasons mostly on front teeth. Its perfect appearance provides natural look. It is very hard to distinguish from natural teeth.
